Wherever you venture in December, you are likely to be afforded the opportunity of experiencing and participating in Christmas events and activities, all offering an insight into local culture and tradition—and Marbella is no different.

Christmas Market Lights

Little enriches a heart more than soaking up the ambiance of Christmas cheer from around the world. The sights and sounds of myriad stalls brimming with traditional and handcrafted goods, whilst basking in the aromas of grilled chestnuts, sausages and mulled wine is redolent of the famous Christmas fairs of Germany, Holland and other more northerly countries.

Indeed, a German Christmas market is the ideal antidote to the bland conformity of chain-store shopping, with its festive atmosphere further enhanced by the ‘Stille Nacht’, when skies seem cooler yet clearer, thus allowing an opening for the stars and the welcome feeling of a winter wonderland.

Festive cheer at Marbella Christmas bazaar

Though unable to provide the latter here in Marbella, the Christmas markets do boast a quaint appeal, managing to evoke a unique festive atmosphere. Many markets begin in November and continue through the month of December, with not only the town hall getting involved but also local schools. Aloha College is running a Christmas Bazaar, in the style of an international food fair on the 28th November from 11.00hrs to 16.00hrs.

A few days later, the Palacio de Congresos de Marbella will be decked out in boughs of holly and 100 stalls ranging from fashion and accessories to sports gear and food, from ten in the morning until ten at night on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of December for the ‘Feria del Stock.’

The traditional Christmas fair of La Cala de Mijas Lions will be held at The Tamisa Golf Hotel on Sunday 6th December between 11.30 and 17.00hrs in aid of charity.

Christmas Market Marbella

On 13th December Christmas in Marbella returns to a much loved setting at La Virginia, a charming residential area whose apartments, townhouses and villas are arranged in such a way as to look like a pretty Andalusian village – complete with cobblestone streets, squares and ivy-covered walls. The dozens of colourful stalls arranged here produce a wonderful ambience. If you’re going to get the Christmas buzz anywhere it’s here.

The Christmas markets are proof that a vibrant social life exists all year round on the Costa del Sol, making it an ideal place to call home.
