There is no question that the Costa del Sol is a golfers paradise, and a favourite with golfers from all over the world, due to its excellent year round weather. The Costa del Sol enjoys over 300 days of sun every year, and with numerous golf courses surrounded by beautiful palm trees, with a backdrop of the Mediterranean sea, it’s easy to see why golfing is so popular on the Costa.

So, when is the best time to play golf on the Costa del Sol? The Costa del Sol has certain months of the year, which are the best times for playing golf. The golf season in Spain starts around mid February until the beginning of July. During July and August it can be too hot, with temperatures reaching towards 40c or more. The season resumes again from September until late November, thereafter it tends to be quiet, with Christmas and the festive period approaching.

The Costa del Sol is also known as the Costa del Golf, due to the fact that there are over 90 golf courses on the Costa, and around 60 golfing resorts, many ranking among the top 10 in Europe.

A combination of good quality golf courses with a superb climate makes the Costa the number one choice to many golfers. People come to the Costa del Sol to play with friends, family or play with fellow members in golf societies.

Golf Courses on the Costa del Sol

Some of the most prestigious courses are located on the coastline, including the Valderrama Golf Club, the San Roque Golf Club, La Reserva and Los Naranjos.

Valderrama Golf Club is one of the must-play golf courses in Europe. The club hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997, where Colin Montgomery famously claimed the winning point. The club is set amongst a cork oak forest, and features an exclusive members club. It has also been awarded the Audobon Environmental Certificate. In 2007 the Volvo Masters commemorated its 20th anniversary at the club.

Due to the success of the Ryder Cup, the Costa del Sol gained worldwide recognition, which led to the development of more quality golf courses, to meet the demand for golf in Southern Spain.

La Reserva Golf Club, designed by the prestigious architect, Cabell B. Robinson, is also one of the best golf courses, and is located on the Sotogrande resort. The 18 hole course, offers magnificent views of the mountains and ocean, and features a majestic clubhouse. The club also hosts many golf tournaments

La Cañada Golf Club, situated on the Sotogrande resort, is a municipal course that has been extended to 18 holes and features a superb new clubhouse. The club enjoys great views of the Rio Guadiaro and the Mediterranean. It is a good course for all handicaps, and features water holes and a ravine on the 9th.

Courses based in Marbella, close to Puerto Banus include La Quinta, this 27 hole complex was designed by Manuel Pinero, and is set in natural surroundings. The club features panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the Sierra Blanca, which surrounds the valley. This is a challenging course, as it consists of sloping fairways and deep bunkers, and water often comes in to play.

Las Brisas Golf Course Marbella

Las Brisas in Marbella is one of the finest and well known golf courses in the area. Las Brisas hosted the World Cup of Golf in the seventies, and saw celebrity golfer Nick Faldo win the Spanish Open in 1987.

Aloha golf course hosted the European Tour events in 2012. Many people consider this course to be the best in the area. Naturally the clubs green fees are a little more expensive, reflecting the superb quality and conditions.

La Cala Resort, Mijas has three excellent and enjoyable 18-hole courses with modest green fees, including replays, as well as offering discounted group rates and season tickets to play all three courses.

It is worth noting that if you are travelling from abroad, many airlines charge extra for transporting your golf equipment. It is often cheaper to hire equipment at selected outlets, and you can find these at various airports, and many offer

premium brand clubs.

A golfing holiday on the Costa del Sol can be the perfect winter getaway, particularly as Northern Europe and other parts of the world suffers the worst of the winter, which makes it near impossible to play golf. The Costa offers the best weather and a variety of great quality golf courses that will suit all individual needs and budgets.
